چکیده

The term spondylodiscitis is an entity that refers to an infection that affects the vertebral body and intervertebral disks. These are commonly caused by pyogenic infections, particularly by Staphylococcus aureus, which responsible for 60% of them. Fungal spinal infections remain a rare pathology, although an increased incidence has been reported due to a progressively more susceptible population (immuno-deficient patient). Fungal spondylodiscitis diagnosis currently relies on the presence of risk factors, microbiology, serological tests (Antigen detection and antibody testing) and imaging such as magnetic resonance with contrast, being the most useful study. The gold standard for establishing a diagnosis of fungal infection is to obtain tissue for histological confirmation or culture; endoscopy is currently the ideal method for sampling. Medical management is the initial approach for most fungal infections of the spine. This usually involves a multidisciplinary approach with anti-fungal therapy under the supervision of infectious disease specialists and bracing with early mobilization, but there are clear indications for surgical treatment where mechanical stabilization by posterior approach and drainage and placement of structured autologous grafts anterior approach, in the same act or a second surgical stage. *Corresponding author: Dr Mario Alberto Cahueque Lemus, Orthopedic Surgeon Centro Médico Nacional de Occidente Hospital, del Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social. Candida dubliniensis spondylodiscitis in an immunocompetent patient. Case report and review of the literature☆

We describe what appears to be the first case of spondylodiscitis due to Candida dubliniensis. Our case adds to the current literature of the importance of C. dubliniensis as a cause of fungemia and subsequent deep seated infections. It highlights the importance of taking fungal as well as bacterial culture from biopsy specimens in patients with spondylodiscitis. We also review the literature c...

Fungal spondylodiscitis due to Candida albicans: an atypical case and review of the literature☆

Spondylodiscitis due to Candida is a rare complication from hematogenic dissemination of infection caused by this fungus. We present an atypical case of spondylodiscitis caused by this germ that occurred after chest contusion and progressed with necrotizing fasciitis of the anterior region of the chest and osteomyelitis of the sternum. Through contiguity, it also affected the upper thoracic spi...

Hematogenous dissemination of Candida dubliniensis causing spondylodiscitis and spinal abscess in a HIV-1 and HCV-coinfected patient

We report a case of spondylodiscitis and spinal abscess following haematogenous dissemination of the emerging yeast Candida dubliniensis in a human immunodeficiency virus-1 (HIV-1) and hepatitis C virus (HCV)-coinfected patient. Although C. dubliniensis is considered less virulent compared to its closest known relative Candida albicans, reports of severe fungal infections are increasing. This c...

Anaerobic Spondylodiscitis due to Fusobacterium Species: A Case Report Review of the Literature

Spondylodiscitis caused by Fusobacterium species is rare. Most cases of spontaneous spondylodiscitis are caused by Staphylococcus aureus and most postoperative cases are caused by Staphylococcus aureus or coagulase-negative staphylococci. Escherichia coli is the most common Gram-negative organism causing spondylodiscitis. Fusobacterium species are unusual causes for anaerobic spondylodiscitis. ...
